About TSR

I decided to start this website because I missed writing. I missed having a thought pop into my head and putting my thoughts out there. After years of writing about baseball, education, and some life stuff on different sites, I wanted one site to cover all of that. So, The Second Read was born.

There will be no "hot takes" or clickbait pieces. I am too old for that. Most second reads provide a much more intelligent, more thorough, and more informed take. That is the goal of anything published here.

For now and the foreseeable future, this site will be free. One day, there will be a "subscriber only" content session. But, for those who subscribe now...it will always be free.

A Little About Me

I have the privilege of being Krystal’s husband and Emersen Hope’s Dad. The two inspire me to continually strive to be the best form of me.

Starting out as an eighth grade English Teacher, I have spent 23 of 28 years as a classroom teacher at the high school level, teaching grades nine through twelve on all different levels and environments. My passion for writing extends to the classroom as my focus is to not only improve student writing, but to ignite a student’s passion for the art of communication.

Over the past twelve years, I have assumed the role of English Department Coordinator. Through this role, I hope to inspire colleagues to foster the love of the written word in their classrooms as well as help them create passionate, safe work environments for students. While the role is rewarding, the best parts of his work day are the three periods that I am in the classroom learning with his students.

Over the years, I have managed to Forrest Gump my way into giving a Tedx Talk, publishing my first book (co-written by “The Admin”, Kris Felicello), present at the National School Boards Conference, and, most importantly, continue to learn so much from my students.

Outside of the Education field, I have worked as a baseball writer. I’ve had work published by USA Today, Baseball Digest, Baseball Prospectus, Gotham Baseball Magazine, and for my own company, FullCountPitch Media, LLC.

A full archive of my work that includes education, sports, and some life stuff is on my blog, Unapologetic Candidness. You can also view my past education writing on The Teacher and The Admin site.
